At the Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday, orders for aircraft continued to pour in despite pressure from the supply chain on jetmakers and grievances from airlines regarding delivery delays. Virgin Atlantic and Japan Airlines announced agreements with Airbus, and Macquarie Airfinance placed an order with Boeing. Additionally, Qatar Airways hinted at the possibility of placing a “sizeable” order for wide-body aircraft at the beginning of the year.
Attendees of this year’s premier aviation industry event had anticipated a low level of deal-making, given that Airbus and Boeing have been completely sold out for several years and are finding it difficult to increase production due to supply chain issues. Some airlines have not been able to capitalise on the post-pandemic travel boom, which some claim is beginning to taper off, because of delays in plane deliveries.
Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss told Reuters, “I think all of us on the airline side are slightly surprised by the long impact of Covid on the supply chain.” At the time, the airline had ordered seven Airbus A330-900s for $807 million, based on estimated delivery prices from Cirium Ascend. “We are pleading with the manufacturers, who supply our… engines, to take all necessary steps to resume operations.”
