Residents of the UAE stuck in traffic every day are thought to lose the equivalent of one day per month. Drivers who talked with the New Times claimed that the time they spend stopped in traffic adds up to a day or two per month, despite the lack of hard data supporting this assertion. These locals believe that spending this wasted time with friends and family would have been more beneficial.
Every day, Khadija Bilal, an Emirati mother of two who works and lives in Sharjah, battles traffic on her way to work in Dubai. She gets up early to get to work on time. “The time I spend in traffic could have been spent with my children at home,” Khadija added.
Living close to the Sharjah Mosque, another working mother must leave her home before 6 a.m. to get to her Al Quoz office by 7 a.m. “Normally, the 45-kilometer drive from home would only take about 30-35 minutes, but if I leave after 7 a.m., it will take twice as long,” she stated.
“It’s worse driving home,” she continued. “To get home, I have to drive for over 1.5 hours. The extra hour of travel time—from the office to the home—for the five-day workweek adds up to more than 20 hours, or nearly one day, per month when computed every month.
