Scammers are now more outspoken in their search for victims. Their most recent strategy involves setting up WhatsApp groups and enticing members to complete purported online tasks, such as liking YouTube videos, in order “to earn passive income.”
One of the groups on Friday saw the addition of a Khaleej Times reporter by a certain Enhmedia Digital Marketing Company 27. The fact that the KT reporter was added to two identical groups—25 and 26—on the same day indicates that the con artists have stepped up their efforts to recruit victims.
The individuals in each group ranged in area code from +62 (Indonesia) to +94 (Sri Lanka), +967 (Yemen), +20 (Egypt), and +971 (UAE). Each group consisted of 50 to 75 people. The phone number that was used by the group creator/host was +20 150 1687757.
Residents of the United Arab Emirates were shocked to be added to the group and were astounded by how the con artists obtained their personal numbers. The host, however, calmly introduced the group and said, “Welcome to our YouTube promotion group! We’re inviting you to work in your spare time to help YouTube bloggers increase their visibility and click-through rates in exchange for passive income.
