On Tuesday, as a missile targeted a Greek-owned vessel in the Red Sea, the US military launched more attacks in Yemen targeting anti-ship ballistic missiles in a region under Houthi control.
The Houthi militia, which is aligned with Iran, has been attacking ships in the area since November. These attacks have disrupted businesses and spooked international powers. Israel has been engaged in a conflict with Palestinian Hamas terrorists in Gaza for over three months. In reaction to American and British assaults on their locations in Yemen, the Houthis have threatened to broaden their attacks to include US ships, claiming that they are behaving in sympathy with Palestinians.
In 2021, the Biden administration overturned a decision made by outgoing President Donald Trump and removed the Houthis from two lists that classified them as terrorists. By placing them back on one of the two lists, the most recent action would identify the Houthis as “specially designated global terrorists.”
The White House confirmed a Reuters report earlier this week, citing US officials, that a further strike was fired against four anti-ship missiles. The White House claimed additional US strikes on Tuesday destroyed ballistic missiles Houthis were prepared to launch. There had been no prior reporting of the strike.
