The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is on the brink of introducing a transformative unified visa system, modeled after the Schengen visa, aimed at bolstering tourism across the region.
The announcement was made by Salim bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Oman’s Minister of Heritage and Tourism, during a recent GCC ministerial gathering in Muscat. The move, which secured unanimous support, promises to streamline travel for tourists across the GCC nations: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait. High-ranking officials, particularly from the UAE, have hinted in recent times about the imminent introduction of this visa system.
Unified GCC Visa: An Overview
1. What is it?
Drawing inspiration from Europe’s Schengen visa system, the GCC’s unified visa aims to allow tourists to traverse the member countries with a single visa. This would simplify the current process where visitors must obtain individual visas for each GCC nation despite their close geographical and transportation connections.
2. Benefits of the Unified Visa:
A senior UAE official emphasized earlier this year that the unified visa would be particularly advantageous for long-haul tourists. The ease of hopping between GCC countries is likely to extend their stay durations and enhance their overall expenditure in the region.
3. Launch Timeline:
Although Minister Mahrouqi hinted at an impending launch, an exact date remains undisclosed. However, the Oman Observer mentioned that more details might be unveiled at a regional interior ministers’ convention scheduled for November in Muscat.
4. Potential Features:
Beyond the visa itself, the GCC might jointly promote tourism via shared marketing campaigns. Discussions have also revolved around the inception of a consolidated booking system and an integrated tourism portal.
Applicability to GCC Residents:
While GCC nationals currently enjoy visa-free mobility within the bloc, it remains uncertain how the unified visa system will impact expatriates residing in member countries. Yet, Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s Minister of Economy, hinted last month at a potential system allowing all GCC residents unrestricted movement between the member states.
Scope of the Visa:
The unified visa would grant its holders access to all the six member countries of the GCC.
Cost and Validity:
Specifics regarding the visa’s pricing and duration are yet to be declared, with comprehensive information anticipated by year-end.
This pioneering visa initiative underscores the GCC’s commitment to boosting regional tourism, enhancing interconnectivity, and fostering economic growth.
