UN chief Encourages Israel to Stop the Escalation, Crossings be Reopened.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the immediate reopening of Gaza crossings to allow essential aid in, and urged Israel to “stop any escalation” after sending tanks into Rafah.
Things are heading in the wrong direction. “I am disturbed and distressed by Israel Defence Forces’ renewed military activity in Rafah,” he stated.

The closure of the Rafah and Karem Shalom crossings has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation. They must be reopened immediately.

The Israeli military’s incursion into Rafah’s eastern sector, which is densely populated with displaced civilians, came a day after Israel warned Palestinians in the area to flee ahead of a long-awaited ground offensive. I urge the Israeli government to halt any escalation and participate constructively in the ongoing diplomatic talks,” Guterres said.

“After more than 1,100 Israelis killed in the Hamas attacks of Oct.7 … after more than 34,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza, haven’t we seen enough?” he responded.

Haven’t civilians been through enough death and destruction? Make no mistake: an all-out assault on Rafah will be a human disaster. The Israeli military’s incursion into Rafah’s eastern industry, which is densely populated with displaced civilians, came a day after Israel warned Palestinians in the area to flee ahead of a long-awaited ground activity.
