The UAE, a pioneer in cloud seeding technology, has announced its commitment to actively share knowledge and experience in rain-enhancement technology to address water scarcity globally. Omar Al Yazeedi, deputy director-general of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), made this announcement during COP28 in Dubai. The UAE, known for advancements in rain enhancement over two decades, utilizes cloud seeding to increase annual rainfall and reduce reliance on seawater desalination.

As part of the commitment to water security, the UAE pledged $150 million in new funding for water security solutions in vulnerable countries. Al Yazeedi emphasized the importance of rain enhancement as a viable and economical water solution for arid and semi-arid regions. Cloud seeding, he explained, can increase rainfall by 15 to 25 percent, benefiting groundwater recharge, freshwater supply, local agriculture, and food security.

The UAE continually improves cloud-seeding technology through initiatives like the UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP), offering up to $1.5 million in funding to winning proposals. Cloud seeding, as demonstrated by the NCM, is considered cost-effective compared to desalinating seawater, with a cubic meter of water produced through cloud seeding being significantly cheaper. Al Yazeedi assured the safety of cloud seeding for humans and the environment, emphasizing the minimal amount of salt used in the process.

Additionally, the NCM is promoting the ‘Early Warnings for All’ initiative, a global campaign by the World Meteorological Organization, of which the UAE currently holds the presidency. The initiative focuses on disaster risk reduction through early warning systems, an essential component for saving lives and reducing economic losses in natural disasters.
