If you believe that hail is only a winter occurrence and never occurs in the summer in a desert nation, you need to reconsider. In the UAE, hail has already been reported twice this week in June.
The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reports that at approximately 5 p.m. today, Saturday, June 8, heavy thunderstorms and hail pummeled the Al Watan road, which is on the way to Hatta. Storm chaser Fahad Mohamad Abdul Rehman is seen joyfully enduring strong winds while rain and hail fall all around him in a video released by the Storm Centre. Watch it right here:
According to the weather forecast for the weekend and as previously reported by Khaleej Times, there were heavy downpours in some areas of Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah. Yesterday, June 7, the NCM also reported seeing light hail over Wadi Mai in Fujairah. Due to the possibility of flash floods, a warning was also sent to people in the country’s eastern regions who were receiving a lot of rain.
Meteorologists claim that hail occurs frequently in the summer. It happens when the upper atmosphere remains sufficiently cold to sustain ice, despite the warm surface temperatures.
The UAE recorded a high of 47.2°C and a low of 19.6°C on Saturday.
