For many weeks, Noor Ahmed, a resident of the United Arab Emirates, has been losing more than Dh3 every day from his post-paid mobile account. It didn’t occur to him until he received a notification from his telecom provider informing him that his credit limit had been reached.
Upon receiving the message from a nearby telecom service provider, I was taken aback as I hadn’t used much of my available balance. I only use my pre-paid mobile balance to make SMS payments for parking. At one of the hypermarkets, I spoke with customer service executives from the telecom service provider. I discovered that the VPN I had installed was why I was charged. I uninstalled it right away as a result,” he declared.
Masoom Fatima, a different long-term resident, lost her balance several days after recharging her VPN app, which she had also installed for audio-video conversations with her loved ones.
“The money simply disappeared from my mobile account after I recharged it every day or two. I experienced it more than once. I stopped losing the credit when one of my friends advised me to uninstall the VPN app,” Fatima said.
