The UAE’s hospitals and clinics are dealing with an increase in waterborne illnesses due to some neighborhoods flooding due to the greatest rainfall ever recorded. Typhoid, dengue, lung illnesses, and skin diseases brought on by extended exposure to water and other moist environments are among the most prevalent instances.
According to Dr. Manoj Sharma, an emergency room physician at Aster Hospital in Al Qusais, the number of fever, cold, and cough cases has increased by 20% in the past few days. Although adults have been becoming sick, children account for the majority of cases due to their weakened immune systems and susceptibility to respiratory infections.
The most prevalent ailments brought on by rain are skin infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, viral fevers, and flu-like disorders. According to Dr. Sayed, group medical director of Aster and Access Clinics in the United Arab Emirates, the main concerns right now are upper respiratory symptoms, cough, pains, fatigue, and fever.
At NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Ain, the daily average of patients seeing general practitioners has increased to 40, from 25 to 30 before to the storms.
There’s been a noticeable rise in viral fever, cold, and cough cases. According to hospital general practitioner Dr. Mujeeb Quadeer, acute bronchitis, rhinosinusitis, rhinitis, acute pharyngitis, nasopharyngitis, and viral fever are among the most often reported rain-related ailments.
