Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, announced late on Friday that he had consented to debate Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic opponent, on Fox News on September 4. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, “I have agreed with FoxNews to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th.”
It was unclear at first whether Harris had consented to the discussion. Shortly after the Vice President won the Democratic Party’s nomination to run as the standard bearer in the November presidential election, Trump made his post. Trump’s presidential campaign was completely upended last month when 81-year-old President Joe Biden backed Harris instead of running for reelection due to growing concerns about his age and declining polling numbers.
There was supposed to be a second Trump-Biden debate on ABC on September 10. It was anticipated that Harris would replace Biden in that manner, but a Trump spokesman stated last week that it would be “inappropriate” to set up a debate before Harris had officially announced as the Democratic nominee. Breaking with political convention, the 78-year-old Republican nominee had earlier declared he would not debate Harris, who is almost two decades his junior. Last month, the former attorney general of California and prosecutor dared Trump to have a face-to-face debate with her.
