As they embark on The Arctic Challenge a historic, one-of-a-kind rowing expedition across the Arctic Ocean three brave UAE citizens are expected to create waves today. Toby Gregory, Orlagh Dempsey, and Andy Savill will row 1,500 kilometres from Tromso, Norway, to Svalbard, one of the planet’s most isolated, harsh, valuable, and vulnerable ecosystems, in order to raise awareness of the pressing problems of plastic pollution and ocean conservation.
They want to be the first unsupported and unaided trio to finish this challenging route, requiring continuous rowing for 20–25 days through all weather conditions. The nation will be proud as their boat, Ocean Guardian, will fly the flag during the expedition.
Along with potentially breaking previous records, there’s a chance to become the first female and mixed team to row the Arctic Ocean.
The Arctic Challenge is a historic journey that aims to expand scientific knowledge, inspire audiences worldwide, and accomplish historic feats. In the run-up to the challenge, the team has been interacting with more than 60 schools and 200,000 students. By the end of November, they hope to have reached one million students worldwide, just in time for the celebration of National Day on December 2.
