The UAE’s efforts in the UN Security Council resulted in a resolution calling for “urgent and extended humanitarian pauses” in Gaza to address the growing crisis for Palestinian civilians during Israel’s aerial and ground attacks. The Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, praised these efforts in a press statement released on Thursday.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) greeted Security Council Resolution No. 2712’s adoption on Thursday with open arms. The resolution demands several days of ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, long enough to allow for the full, urgent, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and the unconditional release of all detainees, particularly children.
As an Arab member of the Council, the United Arab Emirates collaborated closely with the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations, which drafted the resolution, as the nation supplied the required backing during the negotiations to arrive at a text that prioritizes child protection.
Since 2016, the Security Council has not adopted a resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict until now, as members have come to an urgent consensus on the necessity to protect civilians, particularly children.
In response to a question about her vote before the Security Council, Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh stated: “We have seen over the past week how working together, overcoming our geographical differences, made it possible to reach this result, and I have confidence that this work will contribute to saving lives.”
