Today, July 18, is a watershed moment in the country’s history, as a pivotal meeting on this day laid the groundwork for the formation of the UAE federation on December 2, 1971. Sheikh Zayed, the country’s founding father, and the rulers of the other emirates signed the Declaration of Union and the UAE Constitution, announcing the UAE’s official name. The Founding Father and his brothers, the Rulers, signed the Union Declaration and the UAE Constitution, announcing our country’s name as the United Arab Emirates. It was a historic day in preparation for the nation’s establishment on December 2nd, when the Union’s foundations were laid. Today, we declare July 18th as Union Pledge Day, a national holiday to commemorate our country’s history and the blessed journey towards establishing the Union.”
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed designated July 18 as Union Pledge Day to commemorate the occasion. He went on to say that Union Pledge Day is an opportunity to commemorate the country’s history while also drawing lessons and morals for the present and future.
Union Pledge Day is the fourth national holiday in the UAE, following Union Day, Flag Day, and Commemoration Day.
Union Pledge Day aims to promote the national values and principles established by the late Sheikh Zayed and other rulers, which continue to serve as the foundation for the nation’s journey. The day will also raise youth awareness of the country’s history, as well as the sacrifices and efforts made to bring about this historic union.
