We recently had the privilege of interviewing Cristina Passione Calò, CEO of Starflare.ai. From relocating to Dubai to founding Starflare, a platform uniquely designed for influencers, Cristina’s journey is truly inspirational. As a women entrepreneur in the tech space, Cristina is emerging as an inspiration for aspiring women entrepreneurs. In this insightful session, the CEO shares her experience and career trajectory in this field, on meeting the market requirements, and visions for her company.
The Beginning
We started the interview by asking, “Can you describe a pivotal moment in your entrepreneurial journey that fundamentally changed the trajectory of your business?”
Cristina shared, “The decision to move from Italy to Dubai has had a profound impact on my entrepreneurial journey and the trajectory of my company. While I co-founded the initial version of our platform in a small town in southern Italy, making the bold choice to relocate to Dubai with a one-way ticket in late 2021 has proven to be immensely fruitful. This move has not only propelled my career forward but has also laid a solid foundation for the future growth and success of our company.”

Eager to learn how Cristina Passione Calò’s business priorities have changed over these years, we asked, “How have your initial visions for the company evolved in response to unforeseen challenges or opportunities?”
She shared, “In our platform’s early stages, predating the birth of Starflare, we had already crafted an advanced algorithm empowering us to analyze influencer profiles and forge connections with brands. Yet, as time progressed, we understood the imperative of expanding our horizons. This pivotal insight propelled us toward the creation of our cutting-edge new platform and app.”
Staying Ahead Of The Curve
To learn how Cristina’s business stays updated with all the latest market developments, we asked, “What strategies do you employ to stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies?”
Cristina shared, “I Co-founded an influencer marketing platform in Italy in 2019 that quickly became one of the largest influencer communities in Italy. When I moved to Dubai I immediately realized that I had to think even bigger and look at the future and what it will be represented by. From here, in 2023 we decided to follow not only market trends but also our vision and combine the world of influencer marketing with Artificial Intelligence.”

She replied, “Having commenced my career as an influencer and social media manager, I gained insights into both realms, comprehending the needs of creators and companies alike. I recognized the considerable challenges influencers encounter in sourcing collaborations and efficiently managing advertising campaigns and payments.
Simultaneously, my partners identified additional areas for enhancement, contributing to significant industry innovations. Our Co-founder, Oscar S., boasts over a decade of experience as a Sales and Marketing Manager, comprehending corporate mechanics and the challenges managers encounter in influencer procurement and management.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Shahid Khan, our CTO and co-founder, is an AI expert with extensive experience in developing cutting-edge technology systems, including those adopted by government agencies. Our combined experiences and visions have culminated in the inception of STARFLARE.”

Retaining the best talents in the team is paramount for the success of a business. So, we asked, “What strategies have you employed to ensure that your company attracts and also nurtures and grows top talent?”
Cristina shared, “We’ve developed a specialized app tailored for influencers and UGC creators, set to launch soon. This app will enable them to discover collaboration opportunities, oversee all advertising campaigns, and facilitate payment receipts. Our community managers possess extensive knowledge of social media dynamics and creators’ requirements, playing a pivotal role in managing our expansive community, which currently boasts over 4,000 influencers and creators.”

We further asked, “In the face of rapid industry shifts, how do you decide when to pivot your business strategy versus staying the course?”
She continued, “At a crucial point in my career, I realized that I wanted more. Just being part of the market wasn’t satisfying anymore; I wanted to transform it, to push its limits. The world of influencer marketing is huge, expected to hit 500 billion by 2028. But it’s also complex and needs simplifying. That’s where our company comes in, offering a fast, easy solution that makes life simpler for companies, agencies, and creators, boosting productivity and results for everyone involved.”

She replied, “We stand as the pioneering platform for UGC creators in the UAE, among the vanguard globally in amalgamating digital marketing with artificial intelligence. We’re also the trailblazers in crafting a unified system with integrated payments, facilitating the seamless initiation and management of all advertising campaigns. Our innovation extends beyond just the platform for businesses; our app for creators promises to be revolutionary as well.”

“As you look to the future, how are you preparing your business to navigate and thrive amidst uncertainties in the business landscape?”
Cristina responded, “I firmly believe that success is inevitable when the right blend of a great idea, a viable market, and a competent team striving to achieve the set objectives is in place. Our company views change as an opportunity, and we are poised and eager to adapt according to market demands.
The uncertainties of the economic landscape do not deter us; companies will always require advertising to thrive and establish their presence in the market. Our company actively contributes to wealth creation: by empowering influencers to leverage social media and earn from it, we not only generate employment opportunities but also help companies optimize their resources for influencer marketing campaigns.”

We were intrigued to learn how Cristina moved forward in her journey in this field and in co-founding a company. So, we inquired, “Can you share your career journey as an influencer and how it led you to co-found Starflare, the first influencer marketing platform in the GCC region?”
“I’ve always been passionate about social media. My journey began as an influencer a decade ago, at the age of 15, when I managed a blog with over 40 thousand subscribers. In 2019, during my first year of law school, I sought extra income to support my studies. Recognizing the potential of social media, I strategically leveraged it to achieve my goals. Initially, I shared my reading list and favorite quotes on Instagram. As my following grew, people became interested in my personal life, prompting me to share more content. Eventually, companies took notice and approached me for collaborations, sponsoring products and services.
Over the years, I’ve partnered with over 100 companies, effectively creating a small business. However, I noticed a lack of tools to streamline my work. At 20, I conceptualized Yield, our first influencer marketing platform. Now, at 25, Starflare embodies my passion and years of experience as an active social media user. With a deep understanding of the platform dynamics, my partners and I are excited to bring innovation to the industry.” She shared.

We asked, “How has your experience as an influencer shaped the vision and mission of Starflare?”
Cristina said, “Being an influencer before venturing into entrepreneurship in this industry gives us a significant competitive advantage. Unlike many competitors who solely pursue market growth numbers, we have an intimate understanding of the needs of creators and managers.
Our vision and mission are strongly influenced by my experience as an influencer. Starflare addresses all the challenges faced by creators: effortless find collaborations, simplified campaign management, and seamless payment processing. With our revolutionary application, creators no longer have to worry about managing multiple campaigns simultaneously.”

She replied, “We selected the GCC market because we see it as a pivotal hub for international business with promising prospects for the future. Positioned strategically, it can effectively cater to the Indian, European, and Middle Eastern markets. Being innovation-centric, this market aligns perfectly with our startup’s goal of revolutionizing the influencer marketing industry.”

To understand the visions of Cristina Passione Calò on being a women entrepreneur in the tech field and the kind of hurdles she overcame in this journey, we inquired, “As a female entrepreneur in the tech industry, what challenges have you faced, what advice would you give to other women aspiring to start their own tech companies?”
She replied, “As a CEO and entrepreneur in the technology sector, I recognize the weight of responsibility that comes with innovation. Charting unexplored territories in industry demands confronting numerous challenges, which I view as opportunities for growth. Each challenge serves as a chance to pause, reassess, and refine our strategies.
In the initial stages, one of the primary challenges was assembling a team that shared my unwavering belief in Starflare’s vision. I was determined to build a team aligned with my direction and vision. I firmly believe that ideas are worthless without execution. Therefore, I dedicated all my energy to transitioning from conceptualization to implementation swiftly, despite the inevitable hurdles along the way.
To aspiring female entrepreneurs, I offer this advice: do not shy away from assuming leadership roles in technology and science. Embrace out-of-the-box thinking and innovation. Resolute and ambitious women understand that they possess the capability to leave an indelible mark on history. This is unequivocally the age of women, and every woman aspiring to be a game-changer should seize this historical moment.”

Leveraging artificial intelligence, Starflare analyzes influencers’ profiles and assigns them an “influencer rate.” This feature accelerates and streamlines the selection process, ensuring optimal matches for ad campaigns. Additionally, Starflare oversees every aspect of the campaign, from initial publication to payment, simplifying the entire process and making it intuitive for all involved parties.” Cristina shared.

We were eager to learn more about the achievements of Cristina’s brand. So, we asked, “Can you share a success story or a particularly memorable campaign that was executed through Starflare?”
She enthusiastically replied, “The Starflare app and platform will soon be launched in the market. We consider it a success to already have thousands of influencers and UGC creators in our database eagerly anticipating collaboration. Our influencers have partnered with major multinational corporations, and with the initial version of the influencer marketing platform, we successfully managed over 80 advertising campaigns. One of the campaigns we are most proud of is the one we did with EXPO 2020.”
Ensuring Authentic Influencers
Identifying and confirming influencers’ authenticity is essential when providing a platform for them. So, we asked, “How does Starflare ensure the authenticity and effectiveness of the influencers on its platform?”
Cristina replied, “Our AI-powered algorithm analyzes creators’ profiles, cross-references the data, and generates what we call the “influencer rate,” effectively indicating the level of influence the creator holds over their followers.”
Plans We Asked Cristina
To learn more about Cristina’s upcoming plans for Starflare, we asked, “What are your plans for expanding Starflare’s reach and capabilities in the coming years?”
“We’ve initiated waitlist signups for the new version and have already garnered over a thousand creators eagerly awaiting the app’s release. Our current plans include pursuing additional funding rounds and launching STARFLARE in the GCC, European, and Indian markets.” She shared.

We ended the session by asking, “How do you balance your passion for social media, marketing, and entrepreneurship in your role as CEO of Starflare?”
Cristina concluded, “I’ve always shared my life with my followers, balancing college and work even before venturing into entrepreneurship. Today, I’m grateful to have a supportive community that follows and engages with my journey as an entrepreneur. Thousands of women send me uplifting messages, expressing how motivating and inspirational my content is to them. Many have been encouraged to pursue their studies or start their businesses because of me, and this fills me with joy and satisfaction.
