Sophie Bayat, the 11-year-old daughter of Sam Bayat, the Founder and CEO of Bayat Group, has made remarkable progress by becoming one of the youngest Canadians to summit Kilimanjaro, one of Africa’s highest peaks.
Sophie and her father began the 7-day climb on February 1st. The climb reaches an altitude of 5,895 meters above sea level. Throughout the journey, Sophie’s father accompanied her and commended her for her unwavering determination and resilience, which contributed to her remarkable achievement.
They followed the Machame route, which allowed more time for acclimatization. They set up camp higher than the Barafu camp, the last camp before climbers attempt the final summit push on the Southern Circuit routes.
On February 7th, Sophie and her father persevered through the difficult weather and successfully reached the Uhuru peak just before sunrise. This unforgettable moment will be etched in Sophie’s memory forever. Despite the frigid temperatures, Sophie did not experience any symptoms of altitude sickness, such as nausea, headaches, or shortness of breath.
Sam Bayat, CEO of Bayat Group, expressed his pride in his 11-year-old daughter Sophie’s mountain-climbing achievement, which he said had made the whole family proud.
Mark Whitman’s article cites Sean Burgess, a renowned Dubai Guinness record holder and member of Sophie’s climbing team, who stated, “Kilimanjaro is a huge physical and mental challenge that requires determination, discipline, and strength of body & mind. To reach the summit as an adult is a big achievement; however, for Sophie, as an 11-year-old, it is an astonishing accomplishment, and one very few people her age have achieved. As the team leader, what was most impressive was not just that Sophie summited, but she did so by leading from the front, without any complaining, and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the 7 days on the mountain. She’s a truly remarkable young lady, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.”
Sam Bayat revealed that Sophie Bayat had set her sights on scaling the 7 summits, which consist of the tallest mountain on every continent. Her recent successful climb of Kilimanjaro is just the beginning of her ambitious journey. He continues, “Sophie’s next challenge: Mt. Elbrus in Russia is a beautiful and challenging mountain for all avid adventurers and a logical next step after Kilimanjaro for those attempting the Seven Summits or Volcanic Seven Summits mountaineering challenges. Our next is the Mount Elbrus expedition. June 24th till July 1st. This will be her 2nd in the list of 7 summits to conquer!”
Check out her complete plan for her climbs, including the one she did this month:
- Africa: Kilimanjaro: Done February 2023
- Europe: Elbrus June 24th, 2023 already, dates are locked in
- North America: Denali December 2023
- Asia: Everest October 2023
- Australia: Kosciuszko by the last quarter of 2024
- Antarctica: Vinson by the end of 2024
- South America: Aconcagua Winter 2024
Her recent successful climb of Africa’s Kilimanjaro in February 2023 has inspired young people globally, proving that hard work, determination, and a positive attitude can achieve anything.
Sophie’s father hopes her journey will inspire more young people to embrace adventure and explore the world. Sophie’s next summit is already locked in, and she plans to climb Europe’s Elbrus in June 2023, which is a more challenging climb due to increased height and energy-consuming snowy conditions.
Sophie is ready to tackle the complex terrain of snowy and icy slopes while wearing snow boots and crampons. Everyone eagerly anticipates her next triumph.
