Russia’s election commission praised “record” results for President Vladimir Putin on Monday, ensuring the former spy’s fifth term in office following a ballot with no genuine opposition.
The Kremlin has cited the weekend poll, which was marred by vote spoilers and Ukrainian bombing of border regions, as proof that Russians were behind Putin’s attack on Ukraine.
All of the 71-year-old’s biggest opponents are dead, imprisoned, or exiled, and the vote came a month after Putin’s chief adversary, Alexei Navalny, died in an Arctic prison.
Kremlin-friendly election commissioner Ella Pamfilova stated, “Almost 76 million people” voted for Putin, ” a record figure.”
Putin has led Russia into isolation from the West by initiating the 2022 Ukraine campaign.
“In the face of the West, we are united,” Pamfilova stated.
In a victory speech late Sunday, Putin vowed that Moscow will resist foreign pressure.
“No one has ever succeeded in something like this in history, no matter who or how much they want to intimidate or suppress our will, our consciousness,” he stated.
