Residents of Dubai lose hundreds of dirhams due to fraudulent Global Village and RTA websites.

Do you want to top off your Nol card? Be careful. The goal of fraudulent websites that imitate RTA’s platform is to steal your money. When you Google “Nol recharge,” the first four websites on your screen are scams. Mohammad Salman, a resident of Dubai, recently learned this the hard way when he attempted to recharge his Nol card with Dh30 and lost Dh1,051 to one such website. “I didn’t suspect anything was wrong because the site looked remarkably similar to RTA’s official platform,” Salman recalled.

He clicked on the website, which sent him to a fake landing page where he had to input his email address, Nol tag ID, and recharge amount. The following step to validate the payment is directed to those who have followed this process. Salman clarified, saying, “I copied the OTP from the payment window because I was in a hurry and didn’t see the amount.”

Salman first believed he had inadvertently put more credit to his smart card, even after seeing Dh1,051 taken out of his debit card rather than Dh30. “I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about topping my card for some time.”

The Indian expat didn’t realize he had been duped until he looked at his Nol balance. He then complained with his bank and the Dubai Police.
