President c. Lands in UAE for Historic Visit to Sign Landmark Trade and Defense Pacts
Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. arrived in Abu Dhabi late Monday, commencing a significant one-day working visit aimed at strengthening strategic and economic ties with the United Arab Emirates. The trip, at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is set to yield two landmark agreements: a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and a Defense Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
A Historic Trade Deal and Strategic Defense Partnership
The centerpiece of the visit is the anticipated signing of the CEPA, which will be the Philippines’ first free trade agreement with a Middle Eastern nation. This pact is expected to dramatically enhance Philippine market access across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, boost exports, attract investment, and accelerate economic growth.
Alongside trade, the defense cooperation MOU marks a strategic expansion of bilateral relations. It establishes a framework for collaboration in advanced defense technologies and security initiatives, moving the partnership beyond traditional areas like labor and energy into more strategic domains.
Engagement at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week
President Marcos will also participate in Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), a premier global forum. He emphasized the platform’s importance for the Philippines to engage on critical issues like energy transition, water security, and climate finance, gaining insights and sharing its own sustainable development perspectives with world leaders.
Strengthening Diaspora and Business Ties
The visit includes engagements with the substantial Filipino community in the UAE, estimated at 900,000 people, and meetings with business leaders. This underscores the vital people-to-people and economic dimensions of the relationship. Philippine Ambassador Alfonso Ver noted the visit reflects rapidly expanding cooperation in new areas like renewable energy, AI, and the digital economy.

The CEPA and defense MOU are poised to deepen the Philippines’ integration into global markets and security architectures, while participation in ADSW elevates its role in international sustainability dialogues.
