The region’s biggest pop culture festival is set to take over Abu Dhabi once again, with Middle East Film & Comic Con confirming a headline-grabbing celebrity addition that has fans buzzing ahead of its September return: WWE legend and Hollywood actor John Cena.
Cena, who will attend the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi festival on September 12 and 13, joins an already impressive and growing roster of international guests for the 2026 edition, which runs from September 11 to 13 after being postponed from its original April dates due to regional conflict.
A blockbuster celebrity line-up
The 17-time wrestling world champion has built a substantial Hollywood career alongside his wrestling fame, with credits including The Suicide Squad, the Fast & Furious franchise, Barbie and Superman. Beyond his entertainment career, Cena also holds a Guinness World Record for granting the most wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation by an individual, adding a layer of humanitarian recognition to his celebrity status.
He joins a line-up that already includes Mackenyu, who won widespread praise for his portrayal of Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, and Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo, known for playing Chewbacca in the Star Wars sequel trilogy as well as Lurch in Netflix’s Wednesday. On the comics side, the event’s Comic Creators Club has assembled award-winning artists Jim Cheung, Frederico Vicentini and Brett Beeding, whose collective body of work spans major storylines including The Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Wolverine and The Death of Superman.
A rescheduled event with strong momentum
This year’s edition arrives later than originally planned, having been pushed back from its initial April 24-26 dates because of the wider regional conflict affecting event planning across the Gulf. Organisers confirmed at the time that all previously purchased tickets would remain valid for the rescheduled September dates, and offered assistance to attendees who had booked accommodation through the event’s official hotel partner.
Despite the disruption, demand for the rescheduled event appears to have remained strong. VIP tickets for the 2026 edition have already sold out, with organisers now pushing an advance-purchase discount on remaining standard tickets ahead of the festival, alongside a Dubai shuttle service whose registration window has been closing in the days leading up to the event.
What fans can expect
Beyond the celebrity meet-and-greets, MEFCC’s 2026 programme includes a range of signature attractions that have become synonymous with the festival over the years. The Artist Alley gives local and regional creators a platform to showcase and sell original artwork and commissions, while the Gaming Arena, hosted in partnership with Abu Dhabi Gaming, features esports tournaments, retro games and hands-on demos across PC, console and mobile platforms.
Cosplay Central will once again host a dedicated competition for the region’s cosplay community, with winners earning the chance to represent the UAE internationally. The Festival Plaza offers an outdoor space for live music, performances and food trucks, while the Otaku District focuses specifically on modern Asian pop culture, including anime-related performances and music.
A growing regional cultural fixture
MEFCC has, over successive editions, established itself as one of the largest pop culture conventions in the wider region, drawing fans of comics, films, gaming, anime, cosplay and television from across the Gulf and beyond. Its continued growth, even in the face of this year’s postponement, points to a maturing entertainment and events ecosystem in Abu Dhabi, one increasingly capable of attracting A-list international talent alongside strong homegrown creative representation.
Looking ahead to September
With more celebrity reveals expected in the lead-up to the event, and VIP tickets already exhausted, organisers appear confident the 2026 edition will match or exceed the scale of previous years. For fans across the UAE and the wider region, the confirmed appearance of a star of Cena’s global profile alongside an already strong roster of guests suggests this September’s MEFCC could prove to be one of its most memorable editions yet.
