We recently had the opportunity to interview Olivia Murphy, Founder of Olivia Murphy Marketing FZ LLC. Olivia, who has a strong interest in media, communications, and marketing, came to appreciate the role that marketing and mindset have in an entrepreneur’s success.
After being associated with several startups and global brands, Olivia Murphy, a Marketing Consultant and Mindset Mentor, founded her consulting company, aspiring to skyrocket her clients to success. In this insightful interview, Olivia Murphy speaks about how she entered this field, the challenges, the role of mindset in an entrepreneur’s journey, and effectively implementing customer insights, along with offering valuable suggestions for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Venturing In This Field
Eager to learn about the beginning of Olivia Murphy’s professional journey, we asked, “Could you start by telling us about your professional career path?”
Olivia shared, “I grew up with a passion for communications, media, and marketing, and was fortunate enough to land an Editor and Brand Manager role shortly after graduating from university in London at a newly launched health and wellbeing brand, which ignited my love for the power of Marketing and Mindset and its ability to make or break an entrepreneurs’ success.
Fast forward a whole decade and I have worked with entrepreneurial startups to FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies, from growing some of the most esteemed magazine titles such as Esquire, Grazia, and Cosmopolitan Middle East, establishing pioneering start-ups across a plethora of industries, to marketing renowned global brands such as PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, FIVE Hotels & Resort and more.”
She added, “My flare for marketing, brand-building, and mindset has seen me take the leap and start my own consultancy and coaching business, Olivia Murphy Marketing; empowering, coaching, and consulting purpose-driven entrepreneurs to grow and achieve their goals with my proven marketing blueprints, to skyrocket my clients to success beyond their wildest dreams.

Overcoming Major Challenges
Adversities are a part of every business journey. So, we asked, “What have been the most significant barriers you’ve overcome, and how have these challenges influenced your leadership philosophy?”
She replied, “I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to leadership. Over the last 10 years working with startups to large consumer brands, I have learned a great deal. For my business, it is important for me to work with individuals who share my vision, are not afraid to challenge my ideas, and for the most part, are better than me at most things.
I’ve had to work on my imposter syndrome and perfectionist tendencies and turn them into positive learning curves; learning to make decisions quickly, not to overthink things, and take calculated risks constantly. Success and growth will not happen surrounding yourself with people who are afraid to speak up and disrupt the norm, or are good at the things you are good at. It’s important to grow, nurture, and foster a dedicated, loyal team, with diverse skill sets and from diverse cultures. It’s also essential to give individuals a clear career growth path and train every member to go above and beyond for our clients.
So many Marketing Consultancies and Agencies KPI their teams on their ability to acquire new business, rather than the results delivered to their clients. For me, of course, new business is always important, but actually delivering over and above on a brief, and results time and time again, will ensure not only that our clients are satisfied and gain our trust, but keep coming back for more.”
Mindset Makes The Difference
We further asked, “You’re a big advocate for mindset when working with entrepreneurs. What advice would you give someone that has a business idea, but is too afraid to start?”
Olivia responds, “You can have all the talent in the world, all the connections in the world, all the capital you need, etc. but if you don’t have the right mindset you will not achieve success. Mindset will make or break your ability to succeed and access your fullest potential. The longer you contemplate starting that business, the more likely you won’t start at all.
And the longer you wait, the chances are that someone else less talented than you, will start that business with your exact idea. There is nothing to wait for; just go for it, because, what is the worst that can happen? If you don’t try, you’ll never know what you’re capable of.”

We were curious to learn how Olivia Murphy ensures her business stays ahead of the curve even amidst tough competition. So, we inquired, “In the context of global competition, how has your company adapted its strategies to maintain a competitive edge?”
She said, “Focus on attracting the kind of clients that will pay, stay and refer. It is so much easier to retain clients who love your work, see the value and results you provide, keep giving you repeat business, and refer others in too.
Relationships, always going above and beyond the brief and confirmed deliverables, providing value, and keeping a finger on the pulse of what is new and exciting in the marketing world, is vital within this industry. It’s important to be abreast of the industry’s evolution, be reactive, nimble, and pivot if necessary. And that’s what keeps it exciting! And will always guarantee the best ROI and results for clients.”

Olivia shared, “When I spoke to smaller startup brands, I saw the struggle entrepreneurs faced in getting the right marketing advice. Budgets would not stretch for big marketing agencies, and hiring a marketing exec or manager required huge overheads and training, as a result, they would try the ‘Spaghetti Strategy’ – throwing unnecessary marketing budgets on a range of things to see which one worked. This is such a waste.

We ended the interview by asking, “Would you like to give beginners in the same industry some advice?”
Olivia Murphy shared, “Believe that whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve. You just have to be committed to making it happen. Network with people who are ambitious and challenge you to be better, be nimble and reactive, stay on top of current trends, and welcome ‘failure’ time and time again.
So many people throw in the towel when things get a little tough, but it’s the failing that proves you are growing. You have the power to design and create a life you love, so stop settling for the norm, go out there, and start building the life you know you deserve – as L’oreal’s legendary marketing tagline puts it so perfectly – Because you’re Worth it.”
