Masdar City, an innovation and sustainability hub in Abu Dhabi to transform all cities into climate change solutions, has opened its first mosque, Estidama Mosque.
With a 500-square-meter dome that can hold 335 worshipers for each of the five daily prayers, the new building in Masdar Park satisfies the strictest international sustainability requirements.
“The Estedama Mosque is a potent representation of our dedication to our society, our religion, and conscientious care of the environment,” stated Mohamed Al Breiki, the Executive Director of Sustainable Development in Masdar City. “We view this as much more than just a place of worship—instead, it’s a community hub in the middle of our city where worshippers may anticipate a profoundly spiritual and ecologically conscientious experience.
In partnership with X-Architects, Masdar City created the Estidama Mosque, emphasizing passive design, a philosophy they support across the city. It is an architectural method that reduces the requirement for energy-intensive cooling by utilizing the surrounding environment and the physical elements of a structure.
