GAZA CITY: As troops searched the hospital for Hamas hideouts, Israeli military ordered the evacuation of Israeli soldiers command Al-Shifa hospital “in the next hour” via loudspeakers on Saturday, according to an AFP journalist there.
The largest hospital in Gaza, Al-Shifa, has emerged as the focal point of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which is currently in its seventh week following the strikes on southern Israel on October 7.
The militants refute Israel’s accusation that Hamas runs a facility beneath Al-Shifa.
Before Israeli troops came in on Wednesday, the UN estimated that 2,300 patients, staff members, and displaced Palestinians were receiving shelter at Al-Shifa.
Numerous deaths in Gaza have been reported by the health ministry due to power outages brought on by fuel shortages during fierce fighting.
Medical experts claim that patients cannot be relocated, despite Israel’s repeated requests for the hospital to be evacuated to the south.
Israeli troops gave hospital director Mohammed Abu Salmiya instructions to make sure that “patients, wounded, displaced, and medical staff are evacuated, and that they should proceed on foot toward the seafront,” as reported by AFP.
