This year, India will launch a communications satellite using SpaceX’s Falcon-9 rocket, marking the first collaboration between the two companies. Elon Musk, the billionaire, is the venture leader and hopes to grow his other businesses in India.
The commercial division of India’s space agency, state-run NewSpace India Ltd. (NSIL), released a statement on Tuesday stating that the high-capacity satellite is intended to improve broadband communication throughout the nation, particularly in isolated and disconnected areas.
According to NSIL, the launch is expected to occur in the second quarter of this year. The satellite weighs 4,700 kg, more than the Indian space agency ISRO’s current record of 4,000 kilograms for spacecraft launches.
The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, is eager to introduce his Starlink satellite internet service to India. He also proposes an investment for Tesla to establish an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in India. However, others in the nation’s domestic business are opposing him.
NSIL said it will fully own, operate and fund the GSAT-20 high-throughput satellite, offering a capacity of 48 gigabits per second.
