The 22-kilometer (14-mile) Atal Setu bridge, which connects inner Mumbai with a rapidly expanding economic area on the other side of the Arabian Sea, is the longest in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will cut the ribbon on it on Friday, marking the culmination of his government’s infrastructure-building initiative.
A major component of Modi’s campaign for a third term ahead of this year’s general election is his five-year, $1 trillion infrastructure push across the nation, which aims to increase employment while also keeping pace with other modernizing countries like China.
The fastest-growing major economy in the world is also showing a stronger public financial position, as seen by its reduction of the fiscal deficit and increase in capital investments. However, some economists anticipate possible problems if the economy is unable to attract more investment from the private sector.
In a speech given late last year, Modi stated, “For years, the lack of modern infrastructure was a real barrier to our development.”
India is currently experiencing the greatest infrastructure construction boom in history.”
Owner of three industries that produce industrial components in the Navi Mumbai neighbourhood to the south and east of the city centre, RK Jain, believes that the Atal Setu bridge, along with other infrastructure, such as a new light rail line and airport, will help transform the area from a “backward area” into a “premium suburb”.
