India: Assam Floods take Eight more Lives, Bringing The Total to 66

As the death toll from this year’s flood reached 66, the situation in the Indian state of Assam grew worse after eight people—three of whom were children—died in the last 24 hours after drowning in floodwaters. On Sunday, two people each died in Dhubri and Nalbari district and one each in Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji, Sivasagar districts,” according to a flood report.

In certain districts, the state’s situation remains dire as of Sunday. Over 2,274,000 individuals across 28 districts continue to be impacted by the flooding.  Kamrup, Nagaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Nalbari, Charaideo, Biswanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Kamrup (M), Darrang, Sivasagar, Chirang, and Tinsukia are among the districts struck by flooding.

The number of affected individuals in Dhubri district alone is 754,791, with 177,928 in Cachar district, 134,328 in Barpeta, 117,581 in Darrang, 112,322 in Golaghat, and 100,926 in South Salmara district following suit.

The administration has established distribution centers and 630 relief camps in 26 districts, housing over 369,000 people. The second wave of flooding affected 1563,426 domestic animals. On Sunday, floodwaters destroyed nearly 300 homes and carried away 214 animals.
