India: As gunmen open fire on Manipur villagers, three people are murdered.

Gunmen in camouflage fatigues opened fire on villagers in the restive northeastern Indian state of Manipur on Tuesday, inflicting at least three fatalities and five critical injuries, according to officials, as the region’s intermittent violence persisted.

Since severe fighting between members of the state’s minority Kuki and majority Meitei tribes began in May in response to a court order urging that benefits awarded to Kukis also be extended to Meiteis, at least 180 people have perished.

The most recent incident was recorded on Monday in the Thoubal district’s Lilong region, when a group wearing camouflage fatigues opened fire on residents without warning.

A senior police source told Reuters over the phone, “Three people died of bullet wounds while five others are in hospital with multiple injuries.”

Regarding the victims’ identities or the alleged identity of the attackers, there was no immediate word.

Since Monday night, the authorities have reinstated an indefinite curfew in the Thoubal district as well as the four surrounding districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, and Bishnupur.
