Iran Claims to Shoot Down Second US F-35 Fighter Jet Amid West Asia Escalation

Iran has claimed that it has shot down a second United States F-35 fighter jet over its territory, marking a fresh escalation in the ongoing conflict in West Asia. According to Iranian state media reports, the advanced stealth aircraft was targeted and destroyed by the country’s air defence systems over central Iran. The claim has raised tensions further.

The claim was reported by Mehr news agency, citing statements from Iranian military officials. Authorities said the jet was hit by a newly developed air defence system operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Officials further added that the aircraft crashed after a “massive explosion,” and indicated that the pilot is unlikely to have survived the incident. No evidence has been provided yet.

This is the second such claim made by Iran in recent weeks. Tehran had earlier asserted that it had successfully struck an F-35 aircraft during the ongoing hostilities, describing it as a significant achievement against one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world. The F-35 is considered a key component of US military air power due to its stealth capabilities and cutting-edge technology. The first claim also remains unverified.

Despite the seriousness of the claim, there has been no official confirmation from the United States. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has not verified the incident, and independent sources have also not confirmed whether an F-35 was actually shot down. Defence analysts have often treated such claims with caution, especially in the absence of verifiable evidence. The lack of confirmation leaves the claim in doubt.

The reported incident comes amid intensifying military activity in the region. Iran has launched missile and drone attacks targeting locations in Israel and parts of the Gulf, while explosions have been reported in cities such as Tehran and Isfahan. At the same time, the United States has been reinforcing its military presence in the region, raising concerns about a broader escalation of the conflict. The region remains on high alert.

Iranian officials have also used the claim to highlight the capabilities of their indigenous defence systems. In statements shared through state-linked platforms, they suggested that the successful targeting of an F-35 demonstrates Iran’s growing military strength and its ability to counter advanced Western technology. This narrative serves both domestic and international propaganda purposes.

Meanwhile, visuals and footage allegedly showing the downed aircraft have surfaced online, though experts have questioned their authenticity. Analysts say that without clear and independently verified evidence, it remains uncertain whether the aircraft involved was indeed an F-35. Previous similar claims have turned out to be false or exaggerated.

The development has drawn global attention, as any confirmed loss of such a high-end fighter jet would be a major event in modern warfare. The F-35 programme represents one of the most expensive and technologically sophisticated defence projects undertaken by the United States. A confirmed shootdown would be a significant blow to US military prestige.

As tensions continue to rise, the situation remains highly fluid, with both sides engaging in military actions and information warfare. For now, Iran’s claim of shooting down a second US F-35 remains unverified, but it underscores the growing intensity and risks associated with the ongoing conflict in the region. The world waits for independent confirmation or denial.
