Muslim pilgrims have been pouring into Saudi Arabia’s holy city of Makkah in preparation for the Hajj, which begins later this week and returns to its monumental scale.
Saudi officials say more than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims arrived in the country by Tuesday, with the vast majority arriving by air worldwide. When the pilgrimage officially begins on Friday, hundreds of thousands of Saudis and others living in Saudi Arabia are expected to join them.
Saudi government agencies in Madinah are intensifying efforts, as the 5th of the month of Dhu Al-Hijjah (Tuesday, 11th June) is the peak day for transferring remaining pilgrims from Madinah to Makkah by bus round the clock, through the designated stations and to the Mosque of Miqat Dhu Al-Hulayfah, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Tuesday. Today, Hijra Road in Madinah will be busy as pilgrims are transported to Makkah, aided by security and health services to ensure orderly transportation.
Mazen Tharwat, Director of the General Syndicate of Cars Madinah Branch, told the SPA that the syndicate mobilised all cadres and vehicles to prepare buses transporting pilgrims to the holy sites. He added that field teams and mobile maintenance workshops are stationed along the Hijra Road connecting Madinah and Makkah, and that support centers monitor the flow of pilgrim bus traffic to Makkah.
