According to media reports, US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday after the organisation came under heavy criticism for failing to prevent a would-be assassin from injuring former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally.
The protection of both sitting and former presidents of the United States is under the purview of the Secret Service, which is in disarray following the July 13 shooting incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman was able to open fire on Trump from a roof.
When Cheatle appeared before the House of Representatives Oversight Committee on Monday, she was met with condemnation from both political parties. Frustrated lawmakers questioned her about the security plan for the rally and the way law enforcement handled the gunman’s suspicious behavior.
The gunfire killed one rallygoer, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump suffered a minor cut to his right ear. Thomas Crooks, the gunman, was shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper. He was 20 years old.
Cheatle, who has been in charge of the organization since 2022, admitted to lawmakers that she was responsible for the shooting and described it as the biggest mistake the Secret Service had made since former President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
