First Alcohol Store for Non-Muslim Ambassadors to Open in Saudi Arabia, According to an Insider

Saudi Arabia is getting ready to launch its first alcohol store in the country’s capital, Riyadh, catering only to non-Muslim diplomats, according to a document and a source familiar with the plans.

According to the paper Reuters saw, customers must register via a mobile app, obtain a clearance code from the foreign ministry, and adhere to monthly purchase limitations.

The action marks a significant turning point in the kingdom’s attempts to welcome commerce and tourists, spearheaded by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

It is also a component of larger strategies to develop a post-oil economy, known as Vision 2030.

The new store will be “strictly restricted” to non-Muslims and is situated in the Diplomatic Quarter neighborhood of Riyadh, where embassies and diplomats live, according to the paper.

It was unclear whether the business would be accessible to other expats who are not Muslims. Saudi Arabia is home to millions of foreigners, most of them Muslim labourers from Egypt and Asia.
