Day after day, the European Union health agency warned its member states to brace for an increase in cases of a deadly strain of mpox. The first case outside of Africa was reported by Sweden.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) declared in a risk assessment that there was “low” overall risk for the general public in the EU and European Economic Area (EAA), which consists of 30 countries in total.
We need to be ready for an increase in imported clade I cases because of the close connections between Europe and Africa, according to a statement from Pamela Rendi-Wagner, director of the ECDC.
“Ensuring effective surveillance, laboratory testing, epidemiological investigation, and contact tracing capacities will be vital to detecting cases” on the continent, the agency continued.
This week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued the highest alert level that the UN organisation can issue due to the rapid spread of a new, more dangerous strain of mpox known as Clade 1b: a public health emergency of international concern.
