Emergency Work from Home: UAE Workers Hope for Flexibility One Month After Storm

It has been a month since the United Arab Emirates had record-breaking rains. Despite the stormy weather that has been persisting since April 15th, some employers demanded that their staff members commute to work on April 16.

To get to their offices, workers had to wade through knee-deep water or drive through flooded roads. Many were compelled by the roadblocks to seek refuge at metro stations, good-will homes, or places of employment.

Since then, they’ve had numerous meetings with their supervisors and offered the option to work from home in an emergency. While some meetings yielded positive results, others did not.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) has requested that private sector companies prioritise the safety of their employees during weather conditions that are unpredictable.

An anonymous employee said, “It was a very frustrating time; everyone struggled, we didn’t get any support, and employers declined every suggestion we would make.”

“I can still clearly recall my attempt to get to work that day. only to discover that floodwaters had harmed my car. It broke my heart. I eventually couldn’t even reach my own home, so I was forced to take refuge at a friend’s.”

After that, she expressed concern about the lack of understanding and support during a meeting he had with his boss.
