The majority of small kidney stones are self-passing. However, surgical intervention may be necessary for kidney stones that are too big to pass naturally or that result in bleeding, renal damage, or persistent urinary tract infections. In this Mayo Clinic Minute, a Mayo Clinic urologist named Dr. Aaron Potretzke discusses some of the various surgical options available for the removal of kidney stones.
“Over the last several years, we have worked increasingly to make surgery even less invasive,” states Dr. Potretzke.
Every year, he operates on hundreds of kidney stones. A ureteroscopy is among the most popular. Varieties of kidney stone operations
The stone can be seen by using a tiny camera that is similar in size to a telephone cord to enter the urinary tract.whether it be in the ureter or the kidney, or sometimes even in the bladder. And then we would break that stone up, if need be, usually with a laser, and then pick out the individual pieces,” he says. And that actually ends up mattering because, while the incision on the outside is smaller, the actual amount of meat of the kidney that you’re disrupting is quite a bit less. And therefore, we think that it, in many cases, may reduce the risk of complications, reduce the risk of pain and enhance recovery,” Dr. Potretzke says.
