COP28 a turning point in world's approach to climate change: Sri Lankan President

Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), viewing it as a paradigm shift in how the world addresses climate change.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during the conference, President Wickremesinghe said that the significance of COP28 rests in its ability to serve as a forum for conclusive choices regarding climate change and the achievement of accords that will advance international efforts. He said, “We should now do our best to get there.”

He pointed out that the UAE has shown that it was capable of “developing and also getting involved in resolving global issues” by hosting COP28.

President Wickremesinghe stated, “We are proposing an international climate change university that will do capacity building and research on climate change but also on the financing needed.”

“Sri Lanka is promoting the tropical belt and start reinvesting in reforesting, in restoring the farms, the grasslands, the mangrove,” he continued, in order to absorb greater carbon dioxide emissions internationally.

The president of Sri Lanka also emphasized the tropical belt’s potential for producing renewable energy, particularly in light of the world’s enormous potential for mangrove and forest regions.
