Concerns About AI Influence in the Indian Election are Raised by Deepfakes of Bollywood Celebrities.

Two A-list Bollywood actors in India are shown criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urging people to vote for the opposition Indian Congress party in the country’s impending general election in fictitious films that have gone viral online.

Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh, two Bollywood actors, are shown in two 30-second videos allegedly criticizing Prime Minister Modi for not fulfilling campaign pledges and neglecting to solve critical economic challenges during his two terms in office. After both AI-generated videos is the Congress election sign and slogan, “Vote for Justice, Vote for Congress.” According to a Reuters analysis, the two videos have received over 500,000 views on social media since last week

India has about 900 million Internet users, and according to a survey by the business school Indian Institute of Management and research group Esya Centre, the average Indian spends more than three hours a day on social media. There are around one billion voters in the nation.

At least 14 videos were still playable on X on Saturday, despite some being restricted on social media. Facebook retained one of the two films Reuters reported to the firm but removed the other. Facebook claimed in a statement that it has “removed the videos” because they broke its rules. X did not reply to questions from Reuters.
