In the financial world, few stories are as captivating as that of a seasoned investor turning from traditional assets to embrace the digital currency revolution. Jonne Välilä is one such figure, a man whose journey from gold to Bitcoin encapsulates a broader trend among savvy investors. As he sits back, reflecting on a decade-long saga that took him from the stability of real estate to the digital gold rush, Jonne’s tale is not just personal—it’s a narrative that mirrors the evolution of investment in the twenty-first century.
A Thesis on Real Estate and the Seed of Investment
It was back in 2012 when Jonne Välilä, then a budding entrepreneur and a student of entrepreneurship, found his calling in the investment world. The spark was lit by wealth coach Mikko Sjögren who was visiting his school, igniting an interest in asset ownership that transcended the traditional stock market plays he was familiar with. “I had always been intrigued by the tangible nature of real estate,” Jonne recalls. “The idea that you could literally touch your investment, make it better, and watch its value grow was fascinating to me.”
With this newfound passion, Jonne dove headfirst into the real estate market. His thesis on investing in undervalued properties became his blueprint for success. “I learned to look for properties that were underappreciated by the market,” Jonne states. “Some new areas were clearly undervalued, so I decided to build relationships with developers focusing on those areas,” he further adds.
“I came across two units in Finland just ten minutes apart,” says Jonne. He elaborates, “One was in a newly developed area and the other in an older district. Despite similar pricing, the older unit required significant repairs, while the new one was rent-ready and commanded higher rent. The pricing didn’t seem logical, so I predicted the new units’ values would rise significantly—and they did. I’ve since sold all my Finnish properties due to my move abroad in 2021. Yet, I’m still on the lookout for undervalued regions worldwide for property investment.”
The Shift to Gold: Hedging Against Inflation
However, the journey was not without its turns. At an investment conference, a speaker’s warning about potential inflation due to the increased money supply struck a chord with Jonne Välilä. It led him to study the matter for hundreds of hours and to hedge his bets with a timeless asset: gold. “There was a simplicity to gold,” Jonne muses. “It’s been a store of value for centuries, but it wasn’t without its practical drawbacks, like storage and security. It was in 1971 that the US dollar was de-pegged from gold. In 2015, I pondered whether history might repeat itself with a major currency re-pegging to gold to enhance its credibility.”
Gold served as a safe haven for Jonne’s portfolio, but as he juggled real estate and gold investments, a new player entered the scene, one that would redefine his financial strategies: Bitcoin.
Bitcoin and the Paradigm Shift in Currency
In 2017, with the wind of inflation concerns at his back, Jonne first encountered Bitcoin. The digital currency, often heralded as ‘digital gold,’ offered an attractive alternative to physical assets. “Bitcoin introduced features that made it more adaptable than gold. It was easier to store, transfer, and its scarcity was absolute,” Jonne explains. “However, at that time the fundamentals were weak. In several keynote speeches, I mentioned that while digital assets could be worth exploring, I personally viewed them as a gamble.”
But Jonne was not one to leap without looking. He embarked on a meticulous study of cryptocurrency, digesting everything from YouTube tutorials to scholarly articles. As he invested his own capital into Bitcoin, Jonne remained grounded, aware that this asset class, like any other, required a tempered approach.
Beyond Bitcoin: A Journey Through the Crypto Landscape
Jonne’s exploration of cryptocurrencies didn’t end with Bitcoin. He witnessed the rise of alternative coins, each promising new features and improvements over Bitcoin. “The crypto world is not a monolith,” Jonne Välilä reflects. “Some cryptocurrencies offer useful features, and though there’s debate over their superiority, I view them as distinct tools suited for varied tasks. Yet, many lack innovation.”
This level of understanding didn’t come overnight. As he puts it, “Diving into cryptocurrency is like learning a new language. You start with the basics, but true fluency comes with time and practice.”
Here, he provides an illustrative comparison, “People often draw parallels between Bitcoin and Ethereum arguing about which one is superior, but that’s missing the point. They serve different functions. Bitcoin, for instance, is a form of money—digital gold, if you will. Ethereum, on the other hand, is a decentralized platform that enables the deployment of smart contracts.”
A Personal Level of Investment: The Wisdom of Experience
Despite his excursions into various asset classes, Jonne maintains a personal touch in his investment philosophy. “It’s never just about the money,” Jonne asserts. “It’s about understanding the asset, its role in the broader economic landscape, and the fundamentals that are driving the pricing.”
As a globetrotter and an enthusiast of cultures, Jonne’s investment strategies are informed by a wealth of international experience. From the bustling markets of Finland to the innovative tech hubs across the globe, Jonne has observed firsthand the varying dynamics that drive value in different contexts.
Real Estate, Stocks, and the Crypto Correlation
Even with his focus on cryptocurrency, His heart still beats for real estate. He continues to apply the lessons learned from his earlier investments to the digital realm. “Whether it’s a plot of land or a slice of digital currency, the fundamentals of investment remain constant,” Jonne Välilä notes. “It’s about recognizing potential, understanding risk, and knowing when to hold versus when to fold.”
This philosophy has served Jonne well as he navigated the volatile waters of the stock market, where he blended technical analysis with fundamental valuation to fine-tune his investment decisions.
Embracing the Future: Bitcoin’s Ascendancy
As global economies continue to grapple with financial uncertainty, Jonne’s belief in Bitcoin’s potential has only strengthened. “The fixed supply of Bitcoin is a game-changer,” He elaborates. “It’s a stark contrast to the endless money printing of fiat currencies. There’s a profound sense of security knowing that Bitcoin cannot be devalued by simply creating more of it because there’s only ever going to be 21 million Bitcoins”
His confidence in Bitcoin is not just theoretical. His commitment is evident in his participation in various cryptocurrency forums and presentations. “Sharing knowledge is a two-way street,” Jonne Välilä often says. “The more I discuss and educate, the deeper my understanding becomes.”
Bitcoin’s Practicality in the Real World
Jonne’s advocacy for Bitcoin also stems from its practical advantages over traditional currency. He points to countries like El Salvador, where Bitcoin has been adopted as legal tender, to illustrate its growing real-world use. “Bitcoin makes transactions quicker, easier, and borderless. Those who claim Bitcoin fails as a payment method misunderstand it. I’ve used Bitcoin to pay for $1 street food in El Salvador via the Lightning Network, which is extremely fast and costs mere fractions of a cent.”And its scarcity is perhaps the most critical feature in an age where traditional currencies are inflated away.”
A Non-traditional Path to Wealth and Wisdom
His journey is not just about the accumulation of wealth; it’s a path that’s led to a wealth of knowledge. From the conference rooms where he first learned of inflationary threats to the digital frontiers of cryptocurrency, he has navigated a complex financial landscape with a pioneering spirit.
“Bitcoin, gold, and real estate may seem worlds apart, but they’re both about recognizing and capturing value,” Jonne Välilä points out. “I still prefer a multi-asset class portfolio, that balances itself, as unexpected events will continue taking place in the world”
Legacy and Looking Forward
While Jonne’s relationship with gold has cooled, his vaults scattered across the globe remain a testament to his investment journey. “Gold was the bedrock of my early investment days,” Jonne Välilä acknowledges, “But Bitcoin represents the future. Its rising adoption rates are a signal that its fundamentals are increasingly being recognized.”
A Visionary’s Insight
In a financial landscape that’s constantly evolving, Jonne stands out as a visionary who’s not afraid to shift gears when the terrain changes. His story from gold bug to Bitcoin enthusiast is more than a personal financial narrative—it’s a reflection of the maturing view of cryptocurrency as a legitimate, valuable asset class in the global economy.
He concludes with a sentiment that encapsulates his philosophy: “Investing is not just about predicting the future; it’s about understanding the present and adapting to it. Bitcoin, to me, represents adaptability at its finest.”
