PARIS: Amnesty International stated on Wednesday that Iranian security personnel sexually assaulted and used other violent methods against women and men who were imprisoned during the nationwide protests that started in September 2022.
In a report, Amnesty International stated that it had records of 45 incidents of rape, gang rape, or sexual assault against demonstrators. It expressed concern that these reported violations appeared to be part of a “wider pattern,” given that there were examples in more than half of Iran’s regions.
Agnes Callamard, secretary general of Amnesty International, stated, “Our research exposes how intelligence and security agents in Iran used rape and other sexual violence to torture, punish, and inflict lasting physical and psychological damage on protesters, including children as young as 12.”
The London-based organization stated that, as of November 24, it had forwarded its findings to the Iranian authorities “but has received no response.”
Following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody, protests broke out in Iran in September of 2022. The Iranian authorities have consistently contested her family’s claim that she was killed by a strike to the head.
