Hernan Crespo’s Al-Ain suffered a setback as they faced defeat in the derby against Al-Wahda. The defeat continued Crespo’s mixed start at Al-Ain. Al-Wahda prevailed against bitter rivals in a heated match despite gaining just 26-per-cent possession. Russia winger Zelimkhan Bakaev and Syria forward Omar Khrbin’s contribution led the side to a victory on away soil.
Zelimkhan Bakaev is gaining support from the fans after doubts regarding the signing of Bakaev in the summer. Bakaev netted twice from 33 appearances at Zenit St. Petersburg in a successful debut campaign, winning the Russian Premier League and Super Cup successes.
The tough start to life at Al-Ain continues for Crespo. The ex-River Plate, Parma, Inter Milan, and Chelsea center forward must swiftly show progress. Crespo is at a club that will not hang about waiting for results to turn. Though Al-Ain secured more possession and totaled the highest number of shots, suffered a rash moment by center-back Kouame Auton for Khrbin’s opener and the counterattack through Iranian midfielder Ahmad Nourollahi’s visionary pass from deep for Bakaev’s second.
Al-Ain under Crespo gained victory against champions Shabab Al-Ahli, then dropped points in a draw at Kalba and a defeat to Wahda. The results dropped Al-Ain from third position to fifth position.
