Following their 18-year incarceration in Dubai, five men from the Indian state of Telangana were freed and returned home. According to SV Reddy, convenor of the Telangana Gulf NRI cell, the five men experienced a tearful reunion with their families on February 20 upon their arrival at the Hyderabad airport.
The Rajanna Sircilla district in Telangana was the birthplace of all five men: Shivarathri Hanmanthu, Shivarathri Mallesh, Shivarathri Ravi, Gollem Nampally, and Dundugula Laxman. They resided at the Sonapur Labour Camp and were construction workers in Dubai.
SV Reddy said that they got into a fight with a Nepalese security guard in 2005. The altercation progressed from verbal to physical assault. The terrible outcome of the affair was that the guard died in a fit of fury. Reddy stated, “It must have been an accident, as they had no malice in their hearts.”
A case was filed at the Dubai Court after the event. They were initially given a 10-year prison term. According to Reddy, the sentence was extended to 25 years following an appeal.
Reddy explained their early release procedure, stating that the accused were freed from prison after serving 18 years thanks to the collaboration of social groups, the Indian Consulate, and the Telangana government.
