Abu Dhabi’s 421 Arts Campus Marks a Decade with Major Exhibition
Abu Dhabi’s leading contemporary art institution, the 421 Arts Campus, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a landmark exhibition titled “Rays, Ripples, Residue.” Open until April 16, 2026, the show reflects on the campus’s decade-long impact on the region’s cultural landscape and the evolution of artistic practice in the UAE and beyond.
A Tripartite Exploration by Three Curators
The anniversary exhibition is structured around three distinct thematic chapters, each curated by a different visionary:
“Ripples” – Curated by Emirati artist and academic Munira Al-Sayegh, this section explores how small artistic moments and cultural gestures create far-reaching influences and connections within communities.
“Residue” – Led by Lebanese curator Nadine Khalil, this introspective chapter examines the traces left behind by history and experience—focusing on memory, cultural remnants, and the accumulated meaning in art over time.
“Rays” – Organized by writer Murtaza Vali, this final strand uses the symbolic and physical presence of light and the sun—a potent motif in Gulf culture—to investigate themes of environment, urban development, and visibility through various media.
Together, these chapters create a rich, interconnected narrative about how art responds to social, environmental, and cultural shifts.
A Decade of Nurturing Emerging Talent
Since its founding in 2015, 421 Arts Campus has become a cornerstone of Abu Dhabi’s art scene. Under director Faisal Al-Hassan, the campus has:
Supported over 1,500 emerging creative practitioners.
Presented more than 50 exhibitions.
Hosted hundreds of public programs, including talks, workshops, and screenings.
Offered vital mentorship, residencies, and professional development opportunities.
Al-Hassan emphasizes the institution’s mission to make contemporary art accessible, engaging, and meaningful for diverse audiences, fostering a space for experimentation and blurring the lines between artists and the public.
Commitment to Accessibility and Community
True to its inclusive ethos, 421 engages its entire community—from visitors to support staff. The campus presents all content bilingually in Arabic and English, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s cosmopolitan identity and ensuring broad accessibility. This approach has helped cultivate a deeper appreciation for art across its diverse audience and even among its own team members.
