As part of the SEHHI program, hundreds of eateries, food outlets, schools, hospitals, and supermarkets throughout the emirate of Abu Dhabi are encouraging healthy eating habits in an effort to create a healthier future.
The innovative program, which was started less than two years ago by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), aims to improve community members’ health by providing them with appropriate food options. “We launched the program to guard against and prevent heart disease,” Dr. Omniyat Al Hajeri, ADPHC’s Executive Director of the Community Health Sector, told Khaleej Times.
Formerly called Weqaya, the SEHHI program guarantees simple identification of nutrient-dense foods and ingredients with its blue logo and designated sections at participating entities.
“SEHHI is made up of several components. According to Dr. Omniyat, one of those is the labeling of healthy foods with SEHHI (the Arabic word for healthy). “It empowers individuals to exercise their freedom of choice and choose what is healthier and better for them than other foods that might negatively impact their general health.”
Almost 300 restaurants and food outlets, all schools run by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), all hospitals and healthcare facilities, a few hypermarkets, and more have joined the movement that began with just twelve names.
