The earthquake on Tuesday, according to authorities in China’s Xinjiang region in the far west, leftover 120 buildings damaged or destroyed and six people injured.
On its official Weibo account, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region’s government announced that two people had suffered serious injuries and four others had minor ones. In addition, some agricultural structures fell, 78 residences sustained damage, and 47 houses collapsed.
Shortly after two in the morning, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the magnitude 7.1 earthquake had impacted Uchturpan county, also known as Wushi county in Mandarin, in Aksu prefecture. According to the official channel CCTV, over 200 rescuers were sent to the epicenter.
Two of the 14 aftershocks that have been registered have magnitudes greater than 5, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Temperatures in Uchturpan County, the epicenter of the earthquake, are far below freezing, with the China Meteorological Administration predicting lows this week as low as minus 18 degrees Celsius, or just below zero Fahrenheit. This winter, severe cold spells have caused severe discomfort in several parts of northern and central China, forcing officials to repeatedly close schools and roads due to snowfall.
