Saudi Arabia's Princess Abeer provides insights from her Antarctic adventure, including everything from sand dunes to melting glaciers.

RIYADH: Princess Abeer bint Saud bin Farhan Al-Saud recently made history by being the first individual from Saudi Arabia and the larger Gulf region to travel to the most remote areas in Antarctica on a study expedition. The princess was one of eighty individuals chosen in November from 1,800 applications from forty-five countries to participate in the Homeward Bound voyage. Homeward Bound is an Australian organization that supports women in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical) leadership.

Astronomers, oceanographers, glaciologists, mathematicians, marine biologists, and engineers specializing in renewable energy were also on board. They worked togetheron many initiatives, some related to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), which took place in Dubai in November and December.

The princess stated: “A few of us worked together on many projects that combined science, art, and policy. We also advocated at the UN by writing reports and preparing to present our findings at COP28.”
