Kuwait Dissolves its Parliament Once More in the Midst of Protracted Political Impasse

During years of political Parliament impasse, Kuwait’s emir dissolved the legislature on Thursday, citing a lawmaker’s alleged insults to the ruler as the reason. The state-run Kuna news agency made the directive from Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber, the nation’s ruling emir, public. It makes no further explanation, blaming the decision on “offensive and uncontrollable” statements made by politicians.

Without providing further details, the state agency bases its decision on politicians’ “offensive and uncontrollable” statements.

On Wednesday, the Cabinet reportedly refused to attend parliament after lawmakers refused to delete remarks by one of their colleagues that purportedly insulted Sheikh Meshal.
