The Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi Opens Today: From Establishment to Launch: the Mandir's five-Year Journey

It has taken a long time and many significant turning points and memorable experiences to build the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East.

The construction of this architectural wonder in Abu Mureikhah has continued nonstop since the foundation stone was laid five years ago. As the temple is dedicated in Abu Dhabi this evening, here is a sampling of the BAPS Hindu mandir’s (temple) history.

April 5, 1997: Pramukh Swami Maharaj prayed and begged for a temple to be built in the middle of Sharjah’s desert, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. “May there be a Mandir (temple) in Abu Dhabi, which will strengthen ties between nations, communities, cultures, and faiths,” he prayed.

August 9, 2015: UAE has decided to donate a piece of land to construct a Hindu temple, according to an announcement made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For the gesture, PM Modi congratulated the UAE government. In thirty-four years, this was the first time an Indian prime minister has visited the Emirates.
