Of the Eight Former Indian Navy Members Released by Qatar, Seven Return Home.

Eight former Indian Navy sailors who had been imprisoned in Qatar have been released, and seven of them went home on Monday morning. This is considered a significant diplomatic win for India, given the court had sentenced the men to death about three and a half months earlier. Later, the sentence was reduced to jail time.

According to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi oversaw every step of the case’s progress and has never refrained from taking action to guarantee the Indians’ return.

The foreign secretary said during a press briefing that Modi will visit the capital of Qatar, Doha, on Wednesday following his two-day visit to the UAE, but added that the trip was long planned.

Without providing further details, the foreign secretary stated that New Delhi is still collaborating with the Qatari administration to guarantee the eighth Indian’s prompt repatriation.

The Indian government expressed gratitude to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, for allowing the Indians to be released and return home in an early morning statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
