According to official media on Wednesday, there have been at least four deaths from a whooping cough outbreak in Belgrade, Serbia. Doctors attribute the outbreak to a decline in vaccination rates.
The deputy director of a pediatric hospital in Belgrade, Vladislav Vukomanovic, informed television station RTS that a fifth youngster who has a respiratory ailment is in severe condition.
About 70 youngsters have been diagnosed, according to the doctor, with two-thirds of them needing to be hospitalized.
Vukomanovic attributed the current spread to a lack of vaccination, particularly among older people.
In Serbia, receiving a whooping cough vaccination is required. But more and more parents are choosing not to vaccinate their kids, which is causing sporadic outbreaks in the area.
Health experts in neighboring Croatia have reported that the whooping cough epidemic they battled to suppress has led to a decline in vaccination rates associated with the anti-vaccine movement.
