Indian Court Permits Hindus to Pray Within the Contentious Mosque

On Wednesday, an Indian court allowed Hindu worshippers to do prayers inside a mosque located in the city of Varanasi, thereby providing insight into one of the nation’s most delicate religious debates.

Hindu activists have been fighting for decades to recapture various Islamic places of worship, including the Gyanvapi mosque, for their religion.

It was constructed by the Mughal dynasty in the seventeenth century in a city where Hindu devotees from all over the nation inter their departed loved ones along the Ganges River.

The Varanasi court decided that the mosque’s basement could be used for prayers by Hindu devotees, who think the structure replaced a temple dedicated to the god Shiva that was demolished.

District officials were mandated by the ruling to “make proper arrangements within the next seven days” to accommodate worshippers.

The ruling is the most recent in a protracted court battle concerning Gyanvapi’s destiny.
