After robots, Barbie, and war, the world rings in 2024

On Sunday, jubilant crowds commenced saying goodbye to the warmest year on record, after a chaotic 12 months characterized by astute chatbots, climatic catastrophes, Barbie and heartbreaking battles in Gaza and Ukraine.

With over eight billion people on the planet today, the population will see out the old and welcome the new, with many looking to escape the burden of exorbitant living expenses and unrest throughout the world.

More than a million revelers crammed the harbour foreshore in Sydney, the self-described “New Year’s capital of the world,” despite police and city officials’ warnings that all good spots were already taken.

Despite the unusually wet weather, Sydneysiders flocked to important locations throughout the day, and they were not let down as eight tons of fireworks illuminated the Harbour Bridge and other famous places with color and light.

Sydney’s stunning display ignited the flames for 2024, the year of summer Olympics in Paris and elections affecting half of the world’s population.

The past 12 months have seen the release of “Barbiegeddon” at the box office, an increase in artificial intelligence technologies that resemble people, and the first whole-eye transplant in history.
